Golden Fulla back in Canterbury
By
JEFF SCOTT
Golden Fulla, the sire of last season’s New Zealand Derby runner-up, Gold Sovereign, will return to the standardbred stallion ranks in Canterbury next spring. The son of Fulla Napoleon began his siring career in Canterbury five seasons ago, standing for two years at Bill Denton’s Russley Lodge, before moving to New South Wales, where he has sired three crops, serving over 100 mares in his last two years there. He has been secured by Peter and Julie McClelland to stand at their newly-formed Kilmorey Stud at Lowburn. The McClellands, in partnership with some friends and relatives, secured the 13-year-old entire from Mr Chris Smith, of New South Wales, who has retained an interest in the horse.
Mr Smith, who recently purchased the well-per-formed Armbro Whiz from North America to stand in Australia, felt that Golden Fulla would be a much more commercial prospect in New Zealand.
Peter McClelland, who left Christchurch after completing a degree at Lincoln College, to work in Wellington for eight years, returned to his present Lowburn property 20 months ago. McClelland has prepared a small team for a number of years, True Knight winning three for him when he trained at Hutt Park.
Golden Fulla, a close relative of the former top New Zealand sire, Garrison Hanover, arrived at Jiis new destination last week.
A fine racehorse which won $405,972 in the United States, taking a
1:58.4 record on a halfmile track and being race timed in 1:55, Golden Fulla left 62 foals from his first seasons at stud in New Zealand.
With his oldest crop now four, he has left 14 winners from 18 to have raced, including Gold Sovereign (1:57 in U.S.); Uncle Hoki (1:56.8 in U.S.); Bionic Raider; Star’s Legacy (last season’s fastest two year old filly over a mile, 2:2); and up-and-coming pacers this term in Frangelico, which won her third from six starts at the New Brighton meeting earlier this month, recording 3:19.8 for the mobile 2600 m; Golden Don (four starts for three wins); and the speedy Southland three-year-old, Lederec. His first Australian crop are now two-year-olds. He has had four starters in New South Wales, two of which have been placed.
