NZPA-AFP Kingston, Jamaica

Devastating fast bowling swept the West Indies to victory by 10 wickets over England an hour before the end of the third day of the first cricket test of the fivematch series at Kingston yesterday. .

England, routed for 159 in its first innings by the fearsome West Indies pace, again faltered in its second after conceding a lead of 148. It lost the openers, Graham Gooch and Tim Robinson, each for a duck, and was dismissed for 152 in spite of a defiant 71 by Peter Willey.

The England skipper, David Gower, fell to Patrick Patterson for a score of nine.

Patterson, making a sensational test debut, also took care of Allan Lamb for 13 when the batsman edged a hook to Roger Harper at first slip. To the dismay of a jubiliant crowd at ;the Sabina Park ground, Patterson had to leave the field nursing an injured hand after bowling only six overs. Willey and lan Botham attempted to salvage the wreckage with a fifth-wicket stand of 55, before an aggressive Botham on 29 was bowled by Marshall, who had earlier despatched Gooch. Joel Gamer had bowled Robinson.

Marshall went on to dispose of David Smith, who hooked a short ball to long leg where Larry Gomes was

set for the catch, and went back to the pavilion with a nought and a test debut total of one.

Paul Downton came next on three, caught at forward short leg from a Michael Holding delivery. Willey reached his half century after being dropped on 23 by Richie Richardson, and at tea he was partnered by Richard Ellison on 10. Patterson, a big 24-year-old, bowled at tremendous speed to take three for 44, for match figures of seven for 74 in his first test, earning him the man of the match award.

Joel Gamer, with three for 22, and Marshall, with three for 29, helped complete England’s misery. The second test is scheduled ,to start in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, on March 7. The West Indies, already 109 in the lead when play began, moved its overnight 268 for seven to an eventual 307 all out.

The wicket-keeper, Jeffrey Dujon, contributed a stylish 54 before he was last out, while the fast-medium bowler, Ellison, dismissed Gordon Greenidge for 58, and Michael Holding for three to . end with England’s best figures of five for 78. ‘ Greenidge and Holding were among the six leg before wicket decisions in the innings, equalling the over-all ’ test record.
