Woolston XI is new suburban leader

Woolston WMC became the new leader in the senior suburban cricket competition after the second-to-last round on Saturday and Sunday.

Woolston defeated Hoon Hay with an outright win, and has a ten-point lead over the second-placed Heathcote. These two teams will meet in the final round, set down for March 8 and 15.

Vistalite Sumner is eight points behind Heathcote, and now out of contention, followed by Upper Riccarton, two points behind.

The other team with an outright victory was Bowleys Hornby, which beat Christchurch WMC at Bradford Park.

Hornby won the toss and got off to a good start, with Andrew Knowles quickly scoring 38 froip six overs. The score then rose briskly to 100 from only 10 overs, then continued through to 217. In reply, Hornby lost an early wicket without scoring, then the other opener, Gary McManus, lost his wicket early at 10. Batting on, using its maximum 55 overs, Hornby struggled to 173 for nine.

Christchurch tumbled in its second innings, adding a further 98 runs, when it had a handy first-innings lead of 44. Needing 143 runs to win, Hornby achieved this with a valuable third wicket partnership of 115 by Trevor Flutey and Ross Morgan. They were both undefeated on 64 and 48 respectively. Flutey had also scored an excellent 61 in his first innings.

Woolston WMC and Hoon Hay both had low-scoring first innings at Garrick Park with Woolston WMC declaring 28 runs behind Hoon Hay’s first innings of 131.

Woolston then needed to score 173 in 80 minutes and 20 overs. It succeeded, with five wickets and seven overs in hand.

For Hoon Hay, Jim Bennie bowled well again, with a total of nine wickets for the match. He took five wickets in the first innings and four wickets in the second.

In the third game between Vistalite Sumner and Heathcote at St Leonard’s Square, Heathcote won the toss and sent the home side into bat Sumner declared in the fiftyfourthover, at 196 for nine, with five batsmen scoring over 20. In Heathcote’s inningsof

198 for eight declared, also in 54 overs, Don Braid (Sumner) added took five wickets.

Sumner began its second innings but at 133 for four, a result being impossible In the time, play was abandoned.

At Beckenham Park in the clash between Southern Districts and Upper Riccarton, Southern Districts struggled in scoring 165 from 52 overs with one of its players retiring hurt Upper Riccarton had passed this figure on the first day and expected to declare overnight Instead it batted the remaining seventeen overs to score a massive 243. Colin Fenwick topscored'on 89 with a hard-hitting performance and was dropped only once.

Southern Districts, with nd alternative, batted out the afternoon, to finish seven down for 171. Roger Queree batted almost the entire innings, eventually being dismissed for 62.

The only century in senior cricket went to Peter Steere of Belfast Senior B, who scored 112.
