AUSTRALIA Bulls push industrials

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer, with bullish sentiment carrying over from last week and positive news from abroad, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 4.9 points to 1061.4, the all industrials index gained 8.2 points to a record 1641.7 and the all resources index improved 2.3 points to 618.1. The gold index added 13.3 points to 926.5.

Turnover was 101.5 M shares worth J101.4M, with rises outnumbering falls by 284 to 183.

Record closes on Wall Street and London markets, combined with firmer gold and metal prices to push the market up, with the mining sector leading the way. Turnover was boosted by the purchase of 42.5 M Offshore Oil shares at 13c by Mincorp Petroleum which also bought 67M on Friday. The market price was 1c down at 10c.

About 2M BHP shares were traded, with the stock losing 8c to 670. Among other market leaders, Bell Resources lost 25c to 465 and CSR 2c to 328.

Heavyweight mining stocks to rise included CRA, up 20c to 586, MIM and Western Mining, both up 10c to 265

and 360 respectively and Bougainville, up 8c to 235. Oil and gas stocks were easier, with Bridge Oil losing 5c to 170, Ampol Exploration the same to 185 and Peko Oil 6c to 56.

On the industrial board Westfield Holdings jumped 50c to 1800, News Corporation 45c to 1290, Fairfax 10c to 810, Boral 6c to 354, TNT 5c to 305 and Pacific Dunlop 3c to 300.

Elsewhere, Coles Myer lost 13c to 430, FAI 6c to 610, Pioneer Concrete 3c to 252 and Bond Corporation 2c to 262.

Major banking stocks traded firmer, with the ANZ jumping 7c to 500 and the National Australia Bank 6c to 488. Westpac remained steady on 464. In share price index futures, active March opened two points firmer at 1069.0 and traded up to close at 1075.5. ■
