Arms found in ship
NZPA-AFP London The crew of an armsladen coaster seized by the French authorities late last week were believed to be British mercenaries apparently heading for Liberia to help overthrow the President, Major-General Samuel Doe.
The Panamanian-regis-tered Silver Sea, after leaving Southampton on February 14, was believed to have taken aboard a £1 million ($2.64 million) arsenal at a sea rendezvous.
The 660-ton coaster Haetear Brest was moved
on Tuesday to the military harbour at Brest after surveillance by the French counter-espionage agency, the D.S.T. Informed sources said Customs officers searching the coaster had found a huge consignment of bazookas, machine-guns, hand-guns, ammunition, uniforms, and- radio equipment. Two other separate sources later said there were only a few rifles and pistols on board, although a Land-Rover and some motorised rubber dinghies, which could have a military use, were found.
