Lord Module sires winner

Special correspondent Invercargill

The former outstanding pacer, Lord Module (Imin 54.95), was credited with his first winner as a sire when Module Chance impressively beat the two-year-old fillies in the $6500 ILT Pace at Invercargill on Saturday.

Module Chance is one of her sire’s first main crop. Lord Module also has six three-year-olds, two of which have qualified. Module Chance is prepared at Weedons by Jack Smolensk! for Mr and Mrs Ewan Tretheway, of Wellington. Smolensk! shares in the ownership of their filly. Module Chance was checked in her debut at Addington on January--28 and was having only her second start on Saturday.

She revealed rare grit for one of her sex and age, as she was left without cover for much of the 2200 m journey, which she cut out in a pleasing 2min 54.925. Conditions were blustery on the 1000 m strip.

Module was bred by Mrs Gwen Halliburton, of Oamaru, who, along with her husband, Jack, bought her dam, Wilma’s Chance (Majestic Chance — Wilma) as a yearling from the Ascot Stud, Invercargill. Wilma’s Chance, which won her way into the intermediate classes for the Halliburtons and Jack Smolenski, lost an Armbro Hurricane foal at the outset of her breeding career and Module Chance is her first surviving foal. "She is a nice filly,” Smolenski said of Module Chance.

“There are a couple of fillies in Canterbury which have a slight edge on her at this stage, but she should keep improving.” The leaders cut out their last 800 m on Saturday in Imin 2.75, but Module Chance’s figures would have been better for that stage, as she was spotting the pacemaker at least three lengths beginning that closing section. Smolenski struck again I later in the programme when he produced Shirt’s Lord to gain a somewhat fortuitous win in the $5OOO Allan Brown Breeders Stakes. Shirt’s Lord capitalised on a mishap which struck the runner-up, Star, near the finish. Star had come back grimly at Shirt’s Lord to master the Canterbury mare in the dying stages. A spreader, however, came loose and tangled in Star’s leg and she broke, losing ground and enabling Shirt’s Lord to come back and win.
