Eggnog should go one better in Westport feature
From ALEX McMILLAN Westport Eggnog, a gallant second in the Westport Businessmen’s Challenge Cup Handicap on the first day on Saturday, should go one better today when she contests the 2000 m Morley Handicap, the feature event on the second day of the Westport Jockey Club’s annual meeting at Patterson Park.
The John Parsonstrained grey made ground purposefully to run Charlie’s Pal to a head in the main event on Saturday and with the likelihood of firmer footing today should have the measure of her first-day conqueror. Prince Rapido made a worth-while contribution to a three-sided finish on Saturday and is another which appreciates the firm footing almost certain to be on offer today, while Charlie’s Pal was thoroughly deserving of success on Saturday and although up I.skg today must be accorded the utmost respect.
The Jim Lalor-trained six-year-old was recording
his first middle-distance win on Saturday and the gelding, raced by Lalor in partnership with his Ashburton breeder, Mr Charlie Moodie, will be well supported again today as ' he attempts to score his seventh career win. It may be worth noting that Lalor was successful in
the feature middle-dis-tance events on both days of this meeting two years ago with Julie’s Boy.
Charlie’s Pal’s success on Saturday continued the fine run in West Coast features this season of representatives of the Ric-carton-based stallion, Palatable, which is also the sire of Eggnog, Blovinski, the star of the West Coast holiday circuit, and the promising Palastone, an impressive sprint winner on Saturday. Unique Gift, which provided the Riccarton jockey, Ray Hewinson, with his first riding success this season when triumphant in a lower grade event on Saturday, is likely to attempt another all-the-way win today, while Kitango, an expensive first-day failure, also makes some appeal in a small but interesting field for the $4400 event, which is the third leg of the T.A.B. treble today. Blazing Bernie (Tavern Visitors Syndicate Handicap) and Double Bridle (Tasman Maiden) appeal as likely winning prospects in the first two legs.
The ultra-consistent Keen Pell is the likely favourite for the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Buller Hotels Association Handicap, while Rovan Lady, a desperately unlucky second on Saturday, could gain compensation in the second leg, the Nelson Moving Company, Ltd, Handicap.
