Kaikoura Show popular

The weather was fine at Kaikoura once again for its seventy-fourth annual Agricultural and Pastoral Show, held on Saturday.

The conditions ensured a good crowd and entries were either up or remained steady in most classes.

However, gate-takings were down from last year by $3OO, to $1798.

The president of the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr Percy Acton-Adams, said it had been a good show and everything had run well.

"We seem to have our organisation down to a fine art,” he said. He said that the three horse-races, run by the Kaikoura Amateur Racing Club, had been popular and did not suffer from the lack of betting facilities. The equalisator was not used this year. This allowed the races to run to time. Mr Acton-Adams said the standard of shearing at the show was very high because many top-class shearers were doing it as a practice for the Golden Shears, to be held soon at Masterton. However, he was disappointed at the lack of entries in some of the sheep classes and the lack of trade displays at the show. The economic climate was probably the reason for rural companies keeping away from the show this year, he said. Results:— Horses Hunter: Champion, Amanda Adam’s Countdown. Reserve Champion, D.
