South Brighton wins annual surf life-saving contest
South Brighton pipped its close rival, Taylors Mistake by a point to take over-all honours in the annual surf life-saving “K Day” competition at Taylors Mistake yesterday.
Both the day’s glamour events, the open six-place rescue and resuscitation contest and the open surf relay were won by South Brighton by narrow margins. This feat was matched by the South Brighton juniors, who could be a force at the national championships in 11 days. The surf •was small and choppy. The day featured a Christchurch adaptation of Australia’s Dearlove relay. Equally confusing and actionpacked was the women’s surf canoe race.
Taylors Mistake competitions continued to dominate open ski and board events while Anthony Doren, of South Brighton, continued his dominance in the beach sprint. The North Beach A open
boat crew made a clean sweep of the boat races and looks a good prospect for the nationals. Sumner and North Beach A had two good tussles in the canoe races while the New Brighton crew languished. New Brighton women won the surf relay well and recorded a good win in the beach relay. Both craft events were won by the Taylors Mistake women, who were also in good form for the nationals.
South Brighton won the over-all contest with 54 points. Taylors Mistake was second, with 53, and North Beach third with 39%.
