Devoy avoids squash upset
NZPA staff correspondent London The world champion, Susan Devoy, turned the tables in the fifth set to avoid a big upset at the 1.C.1. squash open at Stockton, England during the week-end.
A quarter-finalist, Alison Cumings (England), led Devoy, 2-1, and then in the fifth set she headed the New Zealander, 4-0. But Devoy recovered to win, 9-5, 3-9, 7-9, 9-3, 9-4.
In the first round the Kiwi star was taken to five games by the much-improved Australian, Liz Irving. Devoy said that she was glad the match against Cumings was over. “I haven’t had much match practice recently.” In the men’s championship, New Zealand’s Ross Norman also moved Into the semifinals.
He scored a 10-9, 9-3, 9-5 win over England’s Jamie Hickox and was on course for another showdown with Pakistan’s Jahangir Khan in the final today. Norman needed five games and a favourable refereeing call at match point to dispatch the Swede, Frederick Johnson, in an earlier round.
