U.S. petrol prices begin to fall
NZPA staff correspondent Washington Petrol prices are starting to fall in the United States as world crude oil prices plummet. A survey of 40 service stations by the “Washington Post” showed that some had dropped petrol below SUSI (SNZI.B6) a gallon to lure customers.
In the District of Columbia regular unleaded petrol sells at SUS 1.12 a gallon. That compares with an average price of SUSI.2O in December. In Maryland the average price is SUSI.O9 a gallon while in Northern Virginia it is SUSI.II.
A national survey shows that that on February 12 the average price, for selfservice (cheaper) unleaded petrol was a little iess than SUSI.O9 a gallon, down about 5c since January, but only 1c less than a year ago. “Prices are starting to come down, but they still have a long way to catch up with what has happened in the crude market,” said Ben Brockwell, editor of “Oil Price Information,” an industry trade journal. Crude oil prices have fallen from SUS3O a barrel to SUSIS on the spot' market since December.
