P.O. rises hit charities
PA Wellington Charities which conduct appeals by mail will be hit by the increase in Post Office charges. So will businesses that use mail a lot.
The Society for the Intellectually Handicapped was to spend about $50,000 this year on postage — $41,500 for a mail drop to every household, and the rest on a direct
mail campaign to identified donors.
The mail drop to householders is done at a special discount rate by the Post Office, but the society’s public education officer, Ms Deborah Willett, said she expected this to rise too. Total mailing cost could increase by $lO,OOO. Mr Michael Parker, of Corso, said postage of $48,000 accounted for
nearly half Corso’s total administration budget of about $lOO,OOO a year.
“Nobody likes to see administration charges going up. People like their money to be spent on the people you help — not on administration,” said Mr Parker.
Corso may approach the Government to seek exemption from the rises for postal appeals.
