AUSTRALIA Industrials make ground

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer, with strong gains by industrials stocks partially offset by falling resources stocks, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 2.7 points to 1052.3, the all industrials index gained 11.7 points to a record close of 1626.4 after reaching a record of 1627.6, but the all resources index lost 3.7 points to 613.8. The gold index put on 3.1 points to 904.5. Turnover was 61M shares worth 5128.1 M, with rises outnumbering falls by 256 to 240. The highlight of the day’s trading was ACI, which jumped 15c to 335. About 6.7 M shares were traded, The bulk of them by Potts West Trumbull at 335, acting on behalf of a New Zealand company, Equlticorp Tasman. BHP lost 10c to a year’s low of 680, with the stock coming under heavy selling pressure after falling in London overnight. About 3.7 M shares were traded. . Among other market leaders, Bell Resources gained 5c to 495. Its parent, the Bell Group, shed 10c to 674 and CSR lost 4c to 328.
