Hawarden Corriedales to $33

Highlights of a successful Hawarden ewe fair yesterday were prices of $33 for a pen of Corriedale two-tooths and $22.60 for early-shorn Corriedale five-year-old ewes. Over all, prices for twotooths and annual draft ewes were satisfactory considering the uncertainty in the farming industry. Regular vendors of heavy Corriedale two-tooths presented their sheep in excellent order and they attracted keen interest. Lighter hillbred two-tooths were not quite as easy to sell. Most top drafting of twotooths were $7 to $lO cheaper than at last year’s fair. The top price of $33 was paid for a pen from D. J. McFadden, of Parkland ($43 last year) and other top sheep ranged from $24 to $3O.

Two-tooths from F. K. Forrester, Heatherdale, sold particularly well, reaching $31.40 which was less than $5 below Mr Forrester’s top price last vear. i

Prices of smaller, hill-bred two-tooths were between $l5 and $lO. A popular event at the Hawarden fair is the competition for the Clifton Cup, won this year by E. J. Millar and Company, of Allandale. The cup is awarded annually to the breeder of the best pen of sheep in the fair and for the last three years had been won by D. J. McFadden. This year’s judges, Messrs Bruce Hoban and Charles Ensor, said they were most impressed with the quality and evenness of sheep from all vendors.

The leading adult ewe price of $22.60 was received by J. K. Forrester, of Black Hills, for 210 five-year-old early-shorn Corriedales. Demand was steady for well-regarded five-year-olds from farms such as Timpendean, Ltd, of Waikari, and Tenterden Downs, of Hawarden, which both received prices in excess of $lB.

Early-shorn ewes were much easier to sell than later-shorn sheep. Most other woolly ewes sold between $l2

and $l5 and good-mouthed shorn ewes fetched $7 to $ll. The yarding included 4087: two-tooths (5193 last year) and 5142 adult ewes (7948).
