PA Hamilton A Northland man who says he delivered his premature son, who was later flown to Waikato Hospital, yesterday admitted taking a car while on his way to visit the infaht. Taiawa Harawira, aged 29, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully taking a vehicle on January 25 and appeared for sentence after earlier pleading guilty to a charge of unlawfully being on a yard. Judge Ryan sentenced him to three months periodic detention. Sergeant Kevin Mathews said Harawira was driving from Northland when his vehicle got
stuck in Whau Valley Road. Harawira took a car from the area and was found nearby. Counsel for Harawira, Mr Chris Tennent, said Harawira was on his way to see his wife and the baby, who is in intensive care in Hamilton. He took the car to drive to Whangarei police station for assistance, he said. Harawira drove it back to the scene . but found his own car gone. The other charge related to Harawlra’s entering a dealer’s yard to swap hub caps which he earlier bought and found to be the wrong size, Mr Tennent said.
