White Lip fancied at Westport

By

ALEX McMILLAN

The likely scratching of Catential from the Westport Businessmen’s Cup will asure White Lip of favouritism for the first leg of the Westport Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow. The well performed Ashburton-trained top weight for tomorrow’s feature race was sore in a shoulder after galloping on his home track yesterday. Peter Williams said that the problem does not appear serious but he does not want to take any risks with the Catus four-year-old.

White Lip was a courageous winner in soft ground on her home track at Riccarton last week. The Michael Pitmantrained daughter of Amalgam preceded her latest success with a fine third behind Canterbury Belle and Ten Winks in the $22,500 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton and is guaranteed of solid backing on that performance alone. Eggnog, which has included among her recent placings a close second to the talented Blovinski in the Reefton Cup, is bound

to be prominent on firm footing, while the Bill Kennedy-trained pair, Campala and Prince Rapido, were both in winning form at this meeting last year and have to be accorded respect. Bundi Royal appears to possess the necessary credentials to beat a very ordinary line-up in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the 2000 m Westpac Banking Corporation Challenge Cup.

Unsuited by soft ground at Riccarton last week. Useful mare which ran Blovinski close In Reefton Cup last month. 6 3383 Kitango 10 .J. Woledgess.o Racing consistently well and likely to be among the favourites here. Placed in this race last year. 7 8360 Campala 5 . R. McCann 54.5 Far better than form suggests and won brilliantly at this meeting last year. Could be at false odds. 8 0248 Prince Rapido 7 B. Pelllngs4.o Faded after pacemaking at Riccarton on. February 6. Has won on the course and not the worst 9 0067 Gritain 9 P. Richards 53.0 Foxton six-year-old which won this race last year. Recent form does not suggest a repeat is likely, however. 10 4035 Rega Lee 3 J. Dowling 53.0 Stablemate of Gritain which has returned, fair efforts in recent starts. Rough chance. Race 7 0 3.30 WESTPAC BANKING CORPORATION CHALLENGE CUP $3200; 2000 m 17910 Reckon So 10 G. Elliot 55.5 First start for almost two months and likely to benefit from the run. 2 0005 Unique Gift 9 R. Hewinson 55.0 Levin mare which wilted to fifth after pacemaking at Riccarton last week. Track should suit and rates an upset chance. 3 0162 Bundi Royal 2 G. Davison 54.5 Easy win at Reefton last month and returned respectable efforts at Omoto. Likely favourite. 4 9778 Iriah Kate 6 . • 54.5 Once looked very promising but latest performances very ordinary. Eighth of 10 at Wingatui on Tuesday. 5 1453 Te Kaahu 1 G. Killick 54.0 Usual honest effort to finish third behind Able Tim at Riccarton last week. Bright prospect, especially on wet track. 6 4453 Debatable 8 C. Johnson 53.0 Omoto-trained five-year-old which rarely runs a bad race. Place chance at least in this. 7 6446 La Tobe 7 52.5

Invariably plugging on well at the finish of her races but hard to accord much chance. 8 4337 Mainstream 5 . 52.5 Took a long time to win a maiden but is very honest and always a prospect in this company. 9 5648 Georgina Girl 3...... J. Woledge 51.5 Is trained on the course but would appear to have little else in her favour. 10 7068 Gregory Shane 4 D. Wadley 51.5 Entitled to be at lengthy odds.
