White Lip fancied at Westport

The likely scratching of Catential from the Westport Businessmen’s Cup will asure White Lip of favouritism for the first leg of the Westport Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow. The well performed Ashburton-trained top weight for tomorrow’s feature race was sore in a shoulder after galloping on his home track yesterday. Peter Williams said that the problem does not appear serious but he does not want to take any risks with the Catus four-year-old.

White Lip was a courageous winner in soft ground on her home track at Riccarton last week. The Michael Pitmantrained daughter of Amalgam preceded her latest success with a fine third behind Canterbury Belle and Ten Winks in the $22,500 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton and is guaranteed of solid backing on that performance alone. Eggnog, which has included among her recent placings a close second to the talented Blovinski in the Reefton Cup, is bound

to be prominent on firm footing, while the Bill Kennedy-trained pair, Campala and Prince Rapido, were both in winning form at this meeting last year and have to be accorded respect. Bundi Royal appears to possess the necessary credentials to beat a very ordinary line-up in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the 2000 m Westpac Banking Corporation Challenge Cup.
