Higher charge at Burwood hostel
Patients attending the artificial limb centre at Burwood Hospital may be charged more for accommodation at the nurses’ hostel. Patients are at present charged $8.40 a day to stay at the hostel. The Canterbury Hospital Board’s finance committee decided yesterday that the accommodation charge should be reviewed so that all costs were recovered. Templeton Hospital charges $35 a day for conference accommodation, but that includes meals.
A board member, Mr Bill, Utley, said he was
worried about the effect the increased charge would have on patients. While they could recover the cost from either the Accident Compensation Corporation or the Social Welfare Department, someone would have to tell them to do so or they might not realise it, he said. Mr David Herman suggested the board might bill the appropriate agency direct instead of sending the bill to the patient. The board decided that an increased fee should be charged. The amount will be decided later.
