Teachers’ salaries

Sir, — When New Zealanders such as B. T. McDonald (“The Press,” February 12) are informed that teachers in England suffer poor pay and conditions, they assume for reasons best known to themselves that this is “very inferior” to that of teachers in. New Zealand. The facts are that at an exchange rate of £1 equalling $2.60, English teachers are better paid at every level. English teachers are poorly paid, but not so poorly paid, it seems, as New Zealand

teachers. We should not attempt to attract English teachers with false ideas of higher pay and better conditions or we will just swell the ranks of the disgruntled. The English teachers should be told that New Zealand is a very beautiful country with a lot to offer those lucky enough to live here, but do not delude them with the false notion that they will be any better off financially than in England. — Yours, etc., D. CHAMPION. February 17, 1986.
