A chance to try outdoor challenges

Last year’s outdoor recreation course run by the Christchurch City Council was such a success, it is being offered again this year. A range of activities for adults is offered in oneday courses held each Tuesday morning at different venues throughout the city. The eight-week programme costs $25. The programme is aimed at encouraging people to get out and have a go at activities they have always wanted to try, explains recreation officer, Caroline Laxton. “We’d like to encourage shift workers who have time on their hands in the
mornings and want something to do, or those sitting at home feeling bored to get out and do something,” she says. “The courses give an opportunity for people to get a taste of a sport or activity they may think they are interested in. “If they like it they can join a club or carry on with the activity under their own steam.” People often found they
met others in the same boat as themselves, especially if they were frightened or hesitant about a particular activity, she says. Courses offered in the eight-week programme this year include rock climbing, abseiling, tubing, canoeing, windsurfing, orienteering and a physical confidence course. The courses will run until mld-April. Those with young children need not feel restricted, as there are creche facilities offered at Pioneer Stadium for those wanting to take part in the course, Caroline Laxton says.
