U.S. offers to speed aid to Chad

NZPA-AP The United States Government offered yesterday to accelerate American military aid to Chad to help in its war against Libyan-backed guerrillas. The State Department joined with France in accusing Libya of bombing the airport in the capital city of N’djamena. The Libyan-backed rebel movement in Chad has formally claimed responsibility for the bombing. The attack was made by a Soviet-made Tupolev

22 jet in what the Libyan news agency, Jana, said was a reprisal for a French attack on Sunday against rebels in the north of Chad. Libya is known to have Tupolev jets; the Chadian rebels are not known to have an air force. The Reagan Administration clearly welcomed the opportunity to support the French in actions against the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gadaffl.

"We are working to ' speed up some of the (military) aid already approved (by Congress), and we are examining what else might be needed urgently,” said Bernard Kalb, a State Department spokesman. He referred to the SUS 6 million (SNZII.3O million) in parts for Hercules transport planes, trucks, and other equipment approved by Congress for , delivery this year. He did not say what form extra i aid might take.
