Circulation increase

“The Press” was one of only two metropolitan daily newspapers to increase its circulation during 1985. The Audit Bureau of Circulation’s figures for ■ the year showed that “The PresS” increased its sales about 3 per cent, from 83,025 in 1983-1984, to 85,581 in 1984-85. This is the biggest circulation figure in the newspaper’s history, and shows an increase of 11,581 copies in the 10 years since 1975.

The “Dominion,” Wellington, also increased its sales 3 per cent, and now has a new circulation of 71,176. The Auckland newspapers, the “New Zealand Herald” and the “Auckland Star,” had the biggest sales losses, the "Herald” dropping about 4000 copies to 243,933, and the “Auckland Star” about 8000 copies to 111,001. The latter’s audit was taken over a two-month period instead of the usual three months, be-

cause of “exceptional circumstances.”

Circulation figures for the other newspapers were; “Evening Post,” Wellington, 86,695; “Star,” Christchurch, 60,012; “Week-end Star,” 36,326; and “Otago Daily Times,” Dunedin, 53,140. The most significant movement in the magazine field was a fall by the "Listener” of 45,792 copies. This is about a 13 per cent decrease, and brings its circulation down to 302,310.
