Wright in doubt
PA Wellington The New Zealand opening batsman, John Wright, is in doubt for the first test against Australia, starting at the Basin Reserve tomorrow.
Wright put his back out at practice yesterday and if he fails to pass a fitness test today he will be replaced. “We might have to bring someone in, we’ll have to see tomorrow morning but Wrighty’s not happy,” said the New Zealand assistant mana-
ger, Glen Turner. Mr Turner said if Wright was fit he would open the innings against Australia with Wellington’s Bruce Edgar. Ken Rutherford, of Otago, may still be shielded from opening the batting if Wright pulls out : “It depends who. the selectors bring in if Wright has to be replaced,” said Mr Turner. “I don’t know whom they (the selectors) regard as the next best player.”
