C.D. appoints Crowe

PA Palmerston North The New Zealand batsman, Martin Crowe, has been appointed Central Districts. captain for the 1986-87 season.

Crowe captained Central in the Shell Cup this season, but the regular captain, Richard Hayward, of Nelson, took over for the three-day Shell Trophy games while Crowe was in Australia with the New Zealand team.

Hayward has announced his probable retirement at the end of this season and Central Dis-

tricts has brought an early end to speculation about his successor. Crowe did not have a happy start to his captaincy as Central performed dismally in the one-day series this season. During the Richard Hadlee testimonial match at Wanganui on Monday night, Crowe admitted he had not particularly enjoyed the experience. "You don’t enjoy a season losing,” he said, “and I went into it cold after the early tour to Australia.” Crowe said captaincy

was one of his ambitions, and he believed it would take him three to four years to learn the art. “We have a young team, too — there’s a lot more work to be done.”' Crowe’s early appointment is confirmation that the talented all-rounder

sees his New Zealand future in the Central Districts area. He said he was greatly impressed with the Central Districts’ administration and particularly praised Central’s executive officer, lan Colquhoun.
