More than 1.8 million new cars were sold in Britain last year. It was an all-time record and 2.2 per cent ahead of the previous highest total, which was recorded in 1983 Of the 1,832,408 cars sold 58.11 per cent of them were imported models. The top-selling car of the year was the Ford Escort (157,269) and it was followed by the Vauxhall Cavalier (134,335) and Ford Fiesta (124,143).
