Backache book popular

PA Wellington Backache is such a universal pain that a book showing how to deal with it, written by a Wellington physiotherapist, Mr Robin McKenzie, has become a best-seller. “Treat Your Own Back” is believed to be the third best-selling book in New Zealand, surpassed only by the “Edmonds Cookbook” and the "Yates Gardening Guide.” Mr McKenzie wrote the book in 1980 after repeated requests by patients. The third edition was published in February. The manager of Spinal Publication, Ltd, Mr Stephen Nickson, said the book had been reprinted 11 times, and translated into Spanish, Dutch, German and French — with further translations pending. The book was particularly popular in the United States, because medical costs were high and it was aimed at selftreatment, Mr Nickson said. In the book, Mr McKenzie deals with common causes of back pain, highlighting bad posture in lifting, sitting, standing and lying down. He discusses exercises back sufferers can do to deal with the pain, and to avoid pain in future.
