Soviet Embassy praises rescue

PA Wellington The Soviet Embassy in Wellington has issued a statement condemning any criticism of the actions of the crew of the Mikhail Lermontov. “In the complicated circumstances, the joint efforts of many New Zealanders and the Soviet crew have succeeded in preventing a terrible catastrophe which might have occurred otherwise as a result of the sinking of the Mikhail Lermontov,” the statement said. “All but one person has been successfully rescued. This important result should be the major factor in the assessment of this tragedy. “The Soviet Embassy wants to register its sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all New Zealanders who have taken part in the rescue and who extended their generous help and sympathy to the Soviet crew.

“However, we are disappointed that certain circles appear to attempt to use this accident in

order to distort the actions of Soviet crew members. “We understand that the master of the ship, Mr Vladislav Vorobyev, also felt compelled to give an interview to the Soviet television and to explain his version of the events as a private citizen who is extremely concerned about all the allegations against his crew and the press coverage of this tragedy.” “The Embassy expresses a hope that all parties will show restraint and responsibility in the aftermath of the sinking of the Mikhail Lermontov.” • NZPA approached the Soviet Embassy and asked to speak to Captain Vorobyev. The Embassy confirmed that he was staying there but said he was not available. The Embassy had previously said that Captain Vorobyev had decided not to comment on the sinking so as not to prejudice the inquiry now taking place.
