Collectors wanted for Churches’ child appeal
Collectors are needed this week-end for the Christchurch Churches Appeal Trust’s house-to-house appeal for children in care. The appeal would be held on Saturday morning and Monday evening, said the trust’s secretarytreasurer, Mr David Denniston. The trust raises money for Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, and Presbyterian social service agencies. When it was formed 50 years ago, the trust’s role was to raise money to provide a regular income for the Churches’ orphanages. Now, apart from the Methodist Children’s Home in Harewood, there
were no big Church-run orphanages, said Mr Denniston. The trust’s main emphasis had now changed to providing money for children placed in care through the Churches’ social service agencies. Money raised in the appeal would be divided equally among the four services. None of the appeal money would be spent by the trust — the trust applied to various other trusts and foundations to cover its running expenses, said Mr Denniston. Appeal organisers hoped to raise at least $30,000 this year. Last year the appeal suffered because it was held only a month after Telethon.
“People assumed we would get money from the Telethon Trust, but we did not because they preferred, reasonably enough, to give money to specific' projects,” said Mr Denniston. This year the appeal was being held earlier; people did not like collecting in wet weather, he said. Church members interested in helping as collectors should get in touch with the convener in their parish. People not members of a parish, and interested in helping to collect, should telephone the trust at 56330 and ask for Mr Denniston. A postal appeal will also be held.
