AUSTRALIA Firmer in mixed trading

•NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer in mixed trading after record closes on Wall Street and London overnight and a firmer gold price pushing up industrial and gold stocks. Near the close of trading, the all-ordinaries index had risen 2.3 points, the all industrials 0.3 to 1614.4 and the gold index 16.3 to 901,4, but the all-resources index lost 2.6 points to 617.6. Turnover was 47.3 M shares worth $72.1M, with rises outnumbering falls by 225 to 167.

About 1.2 M BHP shares traded and brokers said there was a lack of buying support for the stock. The share price closed 10c down at 690 after reaching 698. Bell Resources put on 10c to 490, the parent company, the Bell Group, added 26c to 690, and CSR lost 4c to 332, Mining stocks were firmer on balance with MIM adding 4c to 252, Western Mining 3c to 345, Peko Wallsend 2c to 518 and Comalco 5c to 205. Elders resources lost 3c to 112.

Gold-related stocks were also firmer with Kidston gaining 20c to 560, Central Norseman 20c to 690, Sons of Gwalia 12c to 362 and Niugini 7c to 185.

Easing world oil prices took their toll on oil stocks. Santos lost 17c to a year’s low of 430 and Bridge oil fell 15c to a year’s low of 165. On the industrial board, J. Gadsden jumped 33c to 370 on news of SA Brewing’s proposed take-over offer and Elders IXL improved 15c to 347 on speculation of an imminent take-over bid.

Elswhere, Coles Myer put on 15c to 450, FAI 14c to 618, Bond Corp 13c to 261, ACI 10c to 320 and Newscorp 5c to 1230. Fairfax shed 10c to 780 and lEL 4c to 714.

Major banking stocks traded mixed with the

National Australia bank adding 3c to 468, the ANZ up 1c to 473 and Westpac down 2c to 453.
