Wrecked cruise ship
Sir, —Somewhere in your files you have a letter from me in support of the present New Zealand policy banning nucleararmed and powered vessels. That letter pointed out the major problems associated with the possibility of a nuclear-powered vessel becoming a wreck on our shores. Before long the Russian cruise ship will begin to break up, and except for the oil spill which will do considerable harm to our marine life, the long-term effects will be negligible. However, had the vessel been nuclear powered, I again ask, who is equipped and responsible for removing a potentially extremely dangerous long-term time bomb?—Yours, etc.,
D. J. LATTIMORE. February 17, 1986.
