Sir, —The proposal of Mr Palmer, the Minister of Justice, for members of Parliament to be required to disclose assets, has produced interesting reactions. There is an. interesting parallel in Sweden. Barbara Wootton, 44 years a J.P. in the United Kingdom, describes in her book, “Crime and Penal Policy,” “the civilised system under which the personal income tax records of individuals are open to public inspection at tax offices.” This practice is widely accepted, and no doubt very popular too with creditors, ex-wives, and mothers-in-law. — Yours, etc.,
M. LYONS. February 17, 1986.
