M.E.D. transfer irks chairman
A power price rise of 5 per cent is better than one of 7 per cent but still not good enough while funds are being transferred from M.E.D. accounts to Christchurch City Council accounts, says the chairman of the Waimairi District Council, Mrs Margaret Murray. The City Council reduced the increase recommended by its airport and electricity committee by postponing $1 million of capital expenditure on a new ripple-control system and by transferring
$3 million rather than $3.7 million to its general accounts. As long as any transfer was being made out of M.E.D. funds, anything above a nil increase was unacceptable, Mrs Murray said yesterday. Electricity consumers throughout Christchurch were still subsidising City ratepayers, she said. “That is not good enough.” The sum being transferred was still the largest transfer in one year by the City Council.
