Itinerary of Royal couple’s visit

The Queen and Prince Philip are due to arrive in Auckland on Saturday’to begin their nine-day Royal tour of New Zealand, including three days in Christchurch from February 28 to March 2. Until Friday, February 28, they will stay in the North Island visiting Auckland, Napier, Hastings, and Wellington. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, is due to meet the Royal couple as they arrive at Nelson Airport at 12.15 p.m. on February 28. From there they

will travel by car to Nelson Haven, on State highway 6, where the Queen will unveil a commemorative plaque at 12.50 p.m. and name the new northern motorway, Queen Elizabeth II Drive.

Before leaving for the Rutherford Hotel, Nelson, the Royal couple will walk among those attending the ceremony. At 1 p.m. they are due to arrive for lunch at the hotel, to begin at 1.20 p.m. From the hotel they will travel back to Nelson Airport at 2.30 p.m. to

depart by R.N.Z.A.F. Andover for arrival at Christchurch Airport at 3.45 p.m. After only five minutes at Christchurch Airport, the Queen and Prince Philip will leave for the north end of Cathedral Square via Memorial Avenue, Fendalton Road, Harper Avenue, Park Terrace, Rolleston Avenue, Gloucester Street, and Colombo Street. On arrival in Cathedral Square at 4.10 p.m. they will be met by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Ham-

ish Hay, and Lady Hay, and Associate Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, and Mrs Caygill. A walkabout will follow. Once they have made their way to the corner of Worcester Street and Oxford Terrace, the Royal couple will be driven to Lyttelton where they will board the Royal Yacht Britannia at 4.50 p.m. Their route to Lyttelton will be via Oxford Terrace, Hereford Street, Latimer Square, Worcester Street, Linwood Avenue, Dyers Road, Tunnel Road, through the road tunnel, Norwich Quay, and the Lyttelton overbridge. On Saturday, March 1, the Queen and the Duke will leave the Britannia yacht at 9.50 a.m. for a “Youth in Action” ceremony at Queen Elizabeth II Park. They will travel via the railway overbridge, Norwich Quay, the road tunnel, Tunnel Road, Dyers Road, Linwood Avenue, Buckleys Road, Kerrs Road, Wainoni Road, New Brighton Road, Bower Avenue, and through the car-park entrance into the stadium.

A fanfare by Boys’ Brigade buglers and St John Ambulance cadet signals will herald the Royal couple’s arrival. Members of 14 associated Canterbury youth groups will assemble on the grass to form the word, “Peace.” The Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, and Mrs Marshall and other dignitaries will meet the Royal couple on their arrival.

Activities at the park will include the singing of “God Save The Queen,” a circuit of the park by the Queen and Prince Philip in an open vehicle,

presentation of flowers to the Queen, and the release of balloons. The Queen and Prince Philip are due to leave the park at 11.15 a.m., via the south end of the .stadium, for Noahs Hotel. Their route will be via Travis Road, Bower Avenue, New Brighton Road, Wainoni Road, Kerrs Road, Woodham Road, Avonside Drive, Kilmore Street, Colombo Street, and Oxford Terrace.

After a short stop at Noahs Hotel they will travel along Worcester Street and Rolleston Avenue to the museum gates of the Botanic Gardens at noon. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, Mrs Lange, and other dignitaries are due to meet the Royal couple there. They will proceed to the Archery Lawn to walk among the guests invited to the garden party there. During refreshments, Sir Hamish Hay will make a presentation to the Queen to mark the Royal visit.

At 12.45 p.m. Prince Philip will take his leave for a lunch at Peacock Springs. He will travel via Rolleston Avenue, Park Terrace, Bealey Avenue, Papanui Road, Harewood Road, Johns Road, McLeans Island Road, and McArthurs Road.

Meanwhile, the Queen will plant a. tree to commemorate the visit and leave for the Britannia at 1 p.m. She will travel via Rolleston Avenue, Hereford Street, Latimer Square, Worcester Street, Linwood Avenue, Dyers Road, Tunnel Road, through the road tunnel, Norwich Quay, and the Lyttelton railway overbridge.

If Saturday’s weather is wet the Royal couple will arrive at Pioneer Stadium, Lyttelton Street, at 12.5 p.m. for refreshments instead of at the Botanic Gardens. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, will meet Prince Philip at Peacock Springs at 1.5 p.m. before he takes a tour round the property. At 1.20 p.m. he will arrive at the luncheon marquee and lunch with about 500 guests which will begin at 1.30 p.m.

An owner of Peacock Springs, Mr Neil Isaac, will present Prince Philip with a mobile conservation education unit, a gift to the World Wildlife Fund. Prince Philip will also be presented with a mounted bronze tuatara, and an auction of an oil painting will follow. At 3 p.m. Prince Philip is due to leave Peacock Springs for the Britannia. He will travel via McArthurs Road, McLeans Island Road, Johns Road, Harewood Road, Papanui Road, Bealey Avenue, Fitzgerald Avenue, Avonside Drive, Linwood Avenue, Dyers Road, Tunnel Road, through the tunnel, Norwich Quay and the Lyttelton railway overbridge. On Sunday, March 2, Mr and Mrs Lange are scheduled to arrive at Christchurch Airport at 10.50 a.m. followed by the Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, and Lady Reeves, at 11 a.m. The Queen and Prince Philip will leave the Britannia at 10.35 a.m. and travel to Christchurch Airport via the Lyttelton overbridge, Norwich Quay, through the road tunnel, Tunnel Road, Dyers Linwood

Avenue, Avonside Drive, Fitzgerald Avenue, Bealey Avenue, Harper Avenue, Fendalton Road, and Memorial Avenue.

After arriving at the airport at 11.10 a.m., the Royal couple will walk to the saluting base with the other dignitaries and be seated for “God Save The Queen,” a Royal gun salute, and an inspection of the Royal Guard of Honour. At the conclusion of the Royal salute they will enter the Royal aircraft, a R.N.Z.A.F. Boeing 727, and leave for Canberra. The other dignitaries will leave by car soon after.
