Hostage freed after rapport
PA Gisborne A Gisborne policeman believes he ' was released by three armed Rastafarians at Ruatoria yesterday because of the rapport he established with them.
The head of the Gisborne armed offenders squad, Detective Sergeant Laurie Naden, was held at gunpoint for three hours before being released unharmed.
His captors are now the subject of an extensive hunt by the police. They were still being sought late last evening. Detective Sergeant Naden’s ordeal began just
after 6 a.m. yesterday when he was taken hostage by the three men after police surrounded a hut at Whare Ponga. It ended about 9.22 a.m. when he was released and picked up by a police helicopter.
He said later he was taken hostage because the men wanted safe conduct from the area. They thought that with him as a hostage it would guarantee safe passage. He was instructed to tell the armed offenders squad members to pull back, which he did, and was then led from the area on a horse.
