The Northland Base Hospital has 378 beds and provides a comprehensive general and obstetric service. It is the largest institution within the jurisdiction of the Northland Area Health Board and accepts referrals for specialist service from the outlying hospitals in Northland. The hospital has approximately 377 positions for nurses, and the Board has a policy not to employ unqualified staff in the nursing service. The hospital provides clinical experience for students in the enrolled nurse programme who are in service, and for students in comprehensive nurse courses under contract.
