Spectacular wins at trials

Spectacular led all the way to win a low-key affair in the C2 and faster pace at the Rangiora trials yesterday. The Armbro Hurricane mare paced the 2600 m in a slow 3min 375, sharpening the pace up from the 800 m in Imin 0.2 s and the closing 400 m in 295, to beat the fast-finishing Amy Bock by half a length, with a neck to Travel Warrant and Romerez.
Philippa Garnett, in front throughout for Ricky Alfeld, held on by a nose in the Cl Pace over 2600 m, sprinting over her last 400 m in 29.45. She ran the full distance in a sedate 3min 36.25, also outside the qualifying standard, to beat Hurry
Home and April Byrd. Dancing Armbro and Kaylene McCormick came clear to win the Cl trotters heat by three lengths in a leisurely 3min 40.5 s from Scotch Leigh (30m) and Saraband Lad. The Tactile gelding, Clever Fella, handy throughout, took time honours for the day of 3min 31.9 s in winning - his CO pace. Other maiden winners were: Grace Mac Faber (3min 35.45), Ardear (3min\33.4s), Not in Vain (3min 37.85), and the trotters, Gameover (3min 43.45) and Captain Sergio (3min 44.45). Lady Rana, a three-year-old half-sister by Mark Lobell to Ruthless in Bob Nyhan’s Rangiora team, took time honours of 33min 15s (2400 m among the qualifiers. Navy Lady (Midship-man-Lady Dryham), a two-year-old filly in Reg Curtin’s Christchurch, team, showed promise to qualify in 3min 16.55. Other qualifiers were: Flashdance (3f Plat. du Jour-Lena Dhu) 3min 15.85; Rebecca’s Joy (3f Wee Win-Gentle Girl) 3min 15.35; Allodium Knight (3f Alias Armbro—Cindy Jo) 3min 16.55; Noble Patron (3c or g El Patron — Local Rose) 3min 15.25; and Rio Filla (3f Stanley Rio — Final Score) 3min 15.45.
