Canty pair for shooting trial

Two highly-regarded Canterbury marksmen, John Whiteman and Geoff Smith, are the only South Island members of a squad of 15 attending the second fullbore shooting trial for the Commonwealth Games at Trentham this week-end. At the end of the trial the fullbore selectors will nominate two shooters for the Games team. The trial will be shot over three stages. Stage one will be seven counting shots over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards; stage two will be 10 counting shots over the same distances; and the third stage will be 15 counting shots over 900 yd and 1000 yd. Chester Burtt, of Ashhurst, the holder of the Ballinger Belt, topped the scores in the first trial, held in January.

If one or both of the shooting nominees are accepted by the Commonwealth Games selec-

tors then Mr Ben Hoban, of Culverden, will be the fullbore section manager, the same job he filled at the 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games. The fullbore event is being held about 130 km out of Edinburgh.

Meanwhile Mr Hoban has been elected a life member of the National Rifle Association.
