Top men charged with deal
NZPA-AFP Khartoum The former Sudanese President, Field-Marshal Jaafar Nemery, and the Saudi Arabian oil billionaire, Adnan Khashoggi, have been charged over an illegal oil deal concluded before the President’s ousting last April, the “Alsahafa Daily” newspaper reported in Khartoum. It quoted the Sudanese Attorney-General, Mr Omar Abdul' Atti, as saying neither man was expected to attend the trial, which would start on March 1. Other defendants, who
will be present, include the former Mining and Energy Minister, Sharif al Tuhami, a former Attor-ney-General, Rashid al Tahir Bakr, a former State Minister for Energy, Yousif Sulieman, a former legal Presidential adviser, Omar al Obeid Balal, and three other senior energy officials. A former senior aide to Nemery, Baha Eddin Muhammad Idris, also charged, is serving a 10year jail sentence after being convicted of financial corruption. The deal gave a subsidi-
ary of Khashoggi’s Triad company control over Sudan’s mineral resources. A committee assigned to investigate the case had recommended charges of violating the Constitution, instigating war aginst the State, harming the country’s independence and its territorial integrity, and subversion of the national economy. If convicted, the accused face execution or life imprisonment and confiscation of their property.
