Need seen for public creche
An inexpensive, professionally run creche is needed in Riccarton, according to a survey by the Riccarton Borough Council.
The survey was made late last year, to see if a community centre was needed in Riccarton. The community affairs officer, Ms Susan Hodder, presented some results to the council’s community affairs committee last evening.
The survey showed a community centre would be welcomed by Riccarton people, she said. However, several conditions would, have to be met to ensure that the centre was widely used,
she wrote in a preliminary report. “There is a genuine need for childcare in the community to provide parents with a break from the child, and to enable parents of pre-school children to attend a community activity,” the report said.
The report also said that subsidies for people on benefits would be necessary, as many solo parents would like to use community facilities but could not afford to pay the full cost Committee members decided not to make any recommendations until a complete report had been prepared.
