Lomax to captain Canty’s biggest team

The former New Zealand high jump champion, Terry Lomax, will celebrate his return to Christchurch from Auckland by captaining the men’s section of the Fresh-up Canterbury track and field team for the national championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on March 7,8, 9. The team of 117 athletes is the largest ever entered by Canterbury in a New Zealand champion-, ship meeting, and it appears to be strong enough to retain the provincial championship it won at Dunedin last year. Darren Dale, at 19 still a junior, has decided to take on the senior field in the 400 m and after his
recent New Zealand junior record run of 46.98 s he must have a great chance of winning the title and also qualifying for the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games. Dale will also have the responsibility of captaining the junior men’s section. He will run the junior 200 m championship as a secondary event. Vai Young, who won her first New Zealand championship in 1956 in the shot, will captain the women’s section. She has been named in both the shot and discus, although her chances of yet another medal are best in the latter event. Elizabeth Ryan is the first-strong thrower in both events. There will be special interest in the perform-
ances of the Canterbury sprint champion, Bev Peterson, who has been in the best form of her long career this season. She was runner-up in the 100 m final and third in the 200 m final last season, and the forthcoming championships probably represent her last chance to win the elusive New Zealand sprint championship — and perhaps even a trip to Edinburgh. In spite of the numbers, the team is slightly down on possible strength because of the absence of Canterbury members of the New Zealand crosscountry team for the world championships. Three New Zealand track champions, Peter Renner (steeplechase), Mary O’Connor (10,000 m and
Sue Bruce (3000 m will be away with the crosscountry team, as well as Wendy Renner and Dave Burridge. The team is.— Senior men 100 m: L. Linton, P. Fuller, L. Simpson. 200 m: D.
