Malaz makes merry
PA Gore Malaz started from the 40m mark but worked bls way gamely through the field to win the M.L.T.-DB South Island Handicap, first leg of the TAB double at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. The open-class pacer, by Lordship but of Tempest Water, came up the side of the field three wide for most of the early part of the journey. He had reached the lead with 1000 m to go and stayed there to the line. It was the four-year-old’s first start since his disappointing run in the Auckland Cup 10 days ago, but he has won before over 2600 m at Gore and had too much class for the rest of the four-year-old field. Malaz is owned by A. M. and I. B. M. Hunter and was driven by his trainer, A. F. H. Hunter. He covered the distance In 3:25.57 to win by 3/2 lengths. Second home was the Sir Dalrae-Hurry Donna gelding, Scurry. He started from 10m and was in the middle of the bunch at the 1400, but came up three wide with a lap to go. He improved strongly in the dash to the finish but could not threaten Malaz.
