Japanese firms test four-megabit chips

Two Japanese companies have succeeded in test manufacturing fourmegabit memory chips, says the “Japan Times Weekly.”

NEC and Toshiba are expected to report the results of the tests at an international meeting on semiconductor technology in Los Angeles this month. Four-megabit chips will help to further drastically reduce the size of computers and office automation equipment and in some cases increase the main memory capacity of computers.

256 K-bit chips are now commonplace in the latest equipment and one-mega-bit chips are starting to be provided in quantity by a few semiconductor manufacturers. Toshiba is said to be shipping 100,000 one-me-gabit chips a month, due to rise to one million a month by April. Hitachi is the only other Japanese company ready to ship one-megabit chips. Other companies are cautious about beginning quantity production, saying it is doubtful whether there will be sufficient demand.
