Avon crews hit form at S.I. rowing regatta

The Avon premier men’s squad will head for Lake Karapiro and the Auckland rowing championships tomorrow encouraged by/its racing form.

Avon’s premier crews rowed well in the South Island championship regatta at Lake Ruataniwha during the week-end and their coach, Mr David Lindstrom, was pleased with the good times recorded. The club won all the sweep-oar events in the premier and open class.

Mr Lindstrom has finalised his crews for the New Zealand championships which began at Lake Karapiro on March 2. Competition will be hot at the Auckland regatta this Friday and Saturday with the top North Island crews all taking part.

In the South Island championships the premier class provided an exciting finish with the Union man, Dale Maher, recording a fast time of 7 min 23.8 s in just holding out the fast-finishing Mark Gardiner (Blenheim) in the single sculls final.

Gardiner later combined with his brother,

Bruce, to win the premier double sculling event. The absence of the Canterbury premier women, already on their way to Lake Karapiro, took the edge off competition in that class.

Oamaru returned to the winners’ rostrum after many years with a good victory in the men’s intermediate coxed four. The regatta attracted a big entry of 470 crews but some rowers had entered too many events and there were 67 scratchings. MEN Premier and open class.— Single: Union (D. Maher) 1, Blenheim No. 1 (M.
