Good Amberley ewes sell well

Most good quality two-tooth Corriedale ewes sold between $23 and $27 at the Amberley ewe fair yesterday. Auctioneers described the clearance of two-tooths and adult sheep as satisfactory and prices generally pleasing, considering the difficult economic climate facing the fanning industry. ~A good-sized gallery of North Canterbury farmers, as well as regular buyers from Mid-Canterbury, followed the sale.

The confidence of buyers was boosted by 75mm to 100 mm of rain which has fallen over most of North Canterbury during the last week.

The two-tooth market did not attract the high prices of recent years, only three pens selling for $3O or more. Some regular vendors had reduced the size of their consignments in expectation of a poor demand.

The yarding of two-tooths was 11,300, compared with 18,040 last year. Prices for good quality twotooths were up to $2 dearer than at the Addington market last week, and medium types were on a par. Some lighter two-tooth ewes were slightly cheaper than at Addington. Top price was $31.50 for 90 two-tooths from the Amberley farm of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. M. R. Harrison (Domett) sold one pen at $30.50 and Blythe Downs, (Cheviot) received $3O for its top drafting. A yarding of more than 1600 Corriedale two-tooths from M. R. Harrison was a feature of the sale, selling between $23 and $30.50.

Early-shorn ewes looked particularly good buying in the annual draft ewe section and most ewe prices were regarded as realistic. Occasional lines of wellbred ewes sold strongly, including annual draft Corriedales from Overton and Foster (Amberley) which reached $22.40. This was an exceptional price brought about by fierce bidding from two' buyers who desperately wanted that particular line. The regular consignment of five-year-old early-shorn Corriedales from I. L. Williams (Parnassus) sold at $lB.BO, compared with $23.60 last year. Most other annual draft ewes sold between $9 and $l4, depending largely on wool. Light ewes sold down to $4.70 and a few pens were passed. The adult ewe yarding was 12,000, only slightly smaller than last year’s 13,500. Sales of Corriedales included.— TWo-tooths Dalgety Crown, Ltd, sold on account of: A. W. and L. N. Davis (Amberley), 143 at $23.20, 95 at $25.20, 96 at $26.60, 146 at $21.40, 117 at $2O; W. N.
