Arms linked to Libya
NZPA-PA Dublin Crates of Irish Republican Army guns seized in Ireland at the week-end carry the words "Libyan Armed Forces.” The Libyan connection was disclosed yesterday when the weapons went on show at the Dublin headquarters of the Irish police.
The crates were coloured green, but beneath the paint the words “Libyan Armed Forces” were clearly visible.
The cache of arms was uncovered in three different locations at dawn on Sunday when Irish anti-terrorist special task force police swooped on addresses in the neighbouring counties of Roscommon and Sligo. Four men are being questioned today and at least one of them was expected to face charges in Dublin’s anti-terrorist Special Criminal Court.
The Soviet and West German-made weapons were put on show after day-long examination by Irish police ballistic experts.
The security success, seen as a potentially crippling blow to the 1.R.A., was believed to be linked to significant anti-terrorist moves in the Netherlands earlier this month. In Amsterdam two weeks ago the Dutch police recovered 20 guns and ammunition when they captured two men on the run from Northern Ireland’s Maze Prison.
