M.P. backs gondola plans
The proposed $5 million Port Hills gondola project could be a real tourist and community asset, said the member of Parliament for Fendalton, Mr Philip Burdon, yesterday.
“This is an excellent initiative and deserves the community’s support,” he said. The project could only help Christchurch.
Some overseas cities had to built high towers to give people a view. Christchurch’s Port Hills were a geographical advantage for the city. “This concept has the capacity to be a real tourist and community asset,” Mr Burdon said. It was essential to promote activities which boosted tourism, which was the South Island’s biggest growth opportunity. The promoters, a group of Christchurch businessmen, should be congratulated for the open way they had declared their plans and encouraged debate. Last evening’s public meeting was an example of their openness, he said. “I hope the scheme’s opponents will be reasonable with their objections, as clearly the promoters want to meet all reasonable objections,” Mr Burdon said.
