Mr James Lilley
Mr James Samuel Lilley, a noted horse breeder and exhibitor, has died in Christchurch, aged 76. Mr Lilley was born in Lyndhurst, Mid-Canter-bury, and was a farmer there most of his life. He was renowned for his hackney horses and ponies. In the 60 years that he exhibited at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show, he is thought to have collected more supreme championship awards than any other exhibitor in the show’s history. He was a founding member of several equestrian societies — the New Zealand Hackney Society and its Canterbury branch, and the Canterbury Hamess Horse and Pony Society. He was a past-president and life member of the Methven A. and P. Association and a highly respected equestrian judge in New Zealand and Australia.
Rugby was another forte. Mr Lilley represented Mid-Canterbury as a right wing from 1930 to 1940, played for Methven and Ashburton clubs and coached Ashburton.
He was a past-presi-dent, life member and patron of the Methven Rugt# Club.
He served in the New Zealand Army in the Pacific during World War 11, and was later a member of the Methven Returned Services Association. Mr Lilley is survived by his wife, and son.
