More small claims
Increasing use of the Small Claims Tribunal is shown in statistics of the Christchurch District Courts’ business last year. Applications lodged last year for hearing of claims totalled 1115, an increase of 187, or just .. over 20 per cent, on the 1984 figure. The Small Claims Tribunal was established in 1976, and an independent referee hears disputed claims of up to $lOOO. The
limit was $5OO early last year. Cases for determination by the tribunal basically relate to contract. The increasing work of the tribunal is attributed by a senior District Court officer to the public’s greater awareness and acceptance of this service, and the fact that the jurisdiction has been increased to cover disputed amounts up to $lOOO.
