New nuclear submarine
NZPA-AP New London, Connecticut The Trident submarine Alaska has been commissioned. The 168-metre submarine will carry 24 nuclear missiles. In spite of cold weather, about 250 opponents of nuclear weapons demonstrated at the commissioning. Many of the protesters blocked buses carrying
guests to the ceremony and were removed by the police. About 50 of the protesters were arrested, New London police said. The Alaska is the seventh Trident delivered to the United States Navy by Electric Boat, a division of the General Dynamics Corporation. The Groton shipyard is the sole builder of Tridents, the nation’s largest nuclear-missile firing sub-
marine. The shipyard has contracts to build five more Tridents. When the Alaska began sea trials last September, an older Poseidon submarine, the Sam Raybum, was deactivated. President Reagan ordered the Sam Raybum be stripped of its missile tubes in order to remain within the limits of the S.A.L.T. II agreement.
