Smarty Pants gains easy win at Addington
By
G. K. YULE
Even though she was three wide for all but the first 400 m, Smarty Pants had too much speed for her rivals in the Schweppes Mineral Water Pace at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway last evening. Betting on the race was dominated by Lorfay, which was paying
about $2.70 for a win. He adopted the role of pacemaker, but was struggling 100 m out, drifting to fourth. Colin de Filippi moved In behind Motu Jodi with about 1600 m to run and she stayed In that position until the straight entrance. She raced clear in a few strides and maintained a strong run to the line, where she had an advantage of almost two lengths.
A four-year-old mare by El Patron from Smart Doll, she is owned and trained at Avonhead by Peter Van Der Looy. Her win last evening was her first since October at Greymouth, but she had been responsible for some smart efforts in the meantime, including a splendid third in the Tlmaru Cup on January 18 at her previous start
Armorel, well back un-
til late, came on well for second, recording her best effort for some time. He was half a neck in front of Late Lustre, which came on strongly recording an effort which deserved a better fate.
Lorfay was well beaten in fourth position, hold-, ing that placing by a head from Mark Seven, with Rotary Motor, Gold and Black, and Timandra close by.
