Australia Greater overseas interest

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer in moderate trading, with greater overseas interest and positive news from the London and New York markets pushing the market up, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 2.8 points to 1055.6, the all industrials index gained 4.8 points to 1565.7 and the all resources index put on 1.3 points to 662.3. The gold index jumped 31.2 points to 989.8. Turnover was 44.7 shares worth J75.4M with rises outnumbering falls by 235 to 209. Brokers said that several leading quality stocks were oversold in last week’s profittaking following negative news from overseas and were traded strongly yesterday. About 700,000 BHP shares were traded and the stock closed 2c down at 872. Among other market leaders, Bell Resources gained 4c to 620 and CSR lost 5c to 360 in heavy turnover. Miners closed firmer on balance, with MIM well supported, gaining 8c to 306 on turnover of 1.2 M. Western Mining added 7c to 367, but CRA lost 2c to 572. Gold-related stocks also closed firmer, with Central Norseman and Kidston both up 30c to 740 and 660 respectively and Sons of Gwalia improving 15c to 360. Most oil and gas stocks traded in a narrow range with the exception of Santos, which put on 4c to 534.

On the industrial board Bond Corp fell 8c to 205 in response to the announce-

ment of its planned tender offer for the Pittsburgh Brewing company. Elsewhere lEL lost 18c to 700, Brierley Investments 6c to 510 and APM 1c to 326. FAI added 24c to 624, News Corp 24c to 946, TNT 13c to 298, Adsteam 10c to 1120 and Boral 6c to 338. Major banking stocks traded mixed, with the National Australia Bank up 6c to 468 and Westpac up 1c to 452. The ANZ was down 3c to 450. In share price index futures, active March opened eight points firmer at 1068.0 and traded down to close at 1066.5.
